Chapter 14

Vodka Martini

“ANOTHER ROUND OF beer for the jerkoffs at table ten thanks, man.” With a smirk fixed on me and his usual bad timing, South slides onto a barstool at the exact moment I lift my cell to my ear. Quickly pressing end call before the call connects, I give him a short nod and turn to grab beers from the fridge.

I need to get rid of him fast.

He rests his forearms on the mosaic-tiled bar. “And Linc wants a vodka martini. Said it’s his new special drink or some shit.”

I throw a sneer toward the long table abutting the back wall of the cafe. It’s packed with various Burntbad and Up Void band members, along with South’s growing entourage of groupies and road crew.

The place looks cool tonight. Turkish lanterns swing from the roof and cast a red-green glow around the room, warming the shadows. Candles flicker from every surface.

I stack beers on the tray. “Linc is a finicky fuck. Last week he insisted watermelon vodka was the only thing he’d ever drink again.”

South laughs. “He sure likes the fancy stuff when you’re at the register.”

“And I’m not even officially working tonight.” Over the last few weeks, the cafe bar I manage has evolved into a hangout for both our bands. It’s a convenient, relaxed environment where we can get drunk and shoot the breeze. I’m not complaining—it’s good for business, drawing bigger crowds each Friday, and it’s also a lot of fun. Except for the hangovers. They’ve been a bit intense.

But the best thing about chilling out with the guys is that it’s a distraction from thinking about Ivy. Nearly a week has passed since she cockblocked me while I had my tongue inside her and, in revenge, I resolved to ignore her forever. Well, that intention caved about five minutes ago. Thank fuck South arrived when he did, because I really should just forget about her, not call her like a suck up. Move on already. Yeah. He saved me from making a big mistake.

My cell rings. Shit. She’s returning my call. Didn’t expect that.

I glance at South who raises a smartass eyebrow, clearly wondering why I’m not picking up my phone. With a chin tip at the tray of beer, I say, “Take them over, would ya? I’ll bring another load along in a minute.”

“Gonna answer that?” He smirks at the photo flashing on my screen—the one of Ivy I took at Mad Wolf last week during our rescue mission to help hang the dick-flower exhibition. Shit. I knew it’d been a dumbass move to save it as her contact picture. Who does that?

“Take the tray over,” I growl.

“When I’m ready.”

Fuck. I have no choice but to ignore South’s wide grin and answer before I miss the call. “Hey, Ivy. How you doing?” I attempt an upbeat, casual tone.

“Other than my cramped neck muscles from painting all day, I’m good. You?”

“Yeah. I’m at the Earth Garden cafe hanging out.” Hearing her voice eradicates all sense of logic and self-preservation.
